What is the difference between salsa on 1 and salsa on 2

Like its name, this type of salsa comes from Cuba and was the first style of salsa I learnt when I first began to take classes. In this style everybody dances the same figures, and each figure has a specific name.

This style is very popular in the US, especially in Miami and also in large parts of Europe. After having learnt Cuban salsa, I started to learn salsa on 1, which basically is distinguished by stepping forward on the first beat of the music with your left foot Lead. This style is also known as LA Style, since it was created there and is now recognized as such all over the world. Salsa on 1 is very popular in Europe and large parts of the US as well as the rest of the world. No need to mention where this style was created.

On2, the 2nd and 3rd beats are the quick quick. You pause on the 4 and 5. So in on1, the first part of your basic is within the measure of music. On2, you split the measure of music in your basic. The pause is between two measures. Now, on2 has two ways of starting. The first way the leader is breaking forward on the 2 and back on the 6. As I said, dancing salsa On1 focuses on the down beats, so it tends to be a bit easier when first learning. Also, because of the abrupt and dramatic nature of the strong down beats, On1 dancing naturally follows with a dramatic style.

Up beats are lighter and subtle, so On2 dancing tends to be lighter and subtle. Because your movements interpret the music as you dance.
