Damage is rolled. A certain amount of that damage the number before the slash in the DR listing gets subtracted from the total. I'll admit that I'm not sure whether this can totally wipe out all damage. It seems likely, but I don't know for sure -- 1 point might always get through. Hopefully, someone else can clarify that. The description after the slash describes what kind of weapon can bypass the DR, thus doing full damage.
Silver weapons do full damage. Hope it helps! Last edited: Oct 15, Patrick Y. Cessnas all the way down RPGnet Member. Validated User. Although their ACs are lower and thus their chance of being damaged is higher , this is more than offset by the reduced damage suffered by attacks. Even though the goblin will hit more often, it will likely end up dealing less total damage over the course of a typical battle.
At higher levels, however, the balance shifts back in favor of monsters that deal large amounts of damage per hit. Advantage: elemental. Thus, high-level characters must be more careful when battling monsters with extreme damage-dealing capability. For example, a dragon can disarm a fighter, or dispel his weapon. Dispelling a single magic item is normally painfully easy, and then the fighters is far weaker against the dragon.
I'd guess it was. It could count as bludgeoning or perhaps piercing depending on what you landed upon flat ground or perhaps spikes. Post reply.

It's rarer, but "silver or magic" means that a magical weapon can bypass the DR, and so can a silvered weapon. The amount stated in the DR is reduced from every attack.
If you have four attacks per round and the enemy triggers an AoO from you, it reduces damage all five times assuming you actually hit him every single time. DR only applies to weapon attacks. It does not apply to spells or other effects under otherwise stated. For cases like fire, acid, electricity, cold and sonic, you have Energy Resistance, which is like DR, but is not constrained by weapon attacks.
Energy Resistance applies to any source of damage that is of the specified resistance, and can only be bypassed by specific feats or features such as the Searing Spell feat, which allows a spellcaster to deal Fire damage to creatures immune or resistant to fire.
